Date/Time: 1st January 4000, 10:02am. Location: Moonbase Esperanto, Io.
It's the slow sunrise, as the weak yellow sun flashes around the side of the great orange gas giant that is Jupiter to shed light upon the orangey-green surface of Io, one of it's larger orbiting moons. The Moonbase is spread across it like a giant metalic spider.
Inside, it's more like a hectic Heathrow airport.
Shuttle 1 transports tourists from all over the galaxy to Earth, the planet now a national heritage site. It is famous as being the most reliable shuttle in the entire universe. It's never late, it's never early.
Until now.
It was tracked past the rings of Saturn, then it vanished.
In two hours the emergency reclaimation shuttle will be launched from the moonbase to try and find out what has happened. Is this an urgent rescue mission, or are the crew just sailing into the open jaws of death?
Meanwhile, the patiet passengers of Departure Lounge 1 are recovering from a rather large celebration. It's not every day you ring in a new millenium. The aftermath has left a considerable amount of mess. People are just starting to resurface, hung-over and dreary from alcohol-induced sleep.
And as this is going on, a little blue box marked 'Police' has materialised in the first class lounge.
No-one sees it. They're all asleep in their closed-off room-pods. It's deserted.
