Name; - Doctor Alexander Bowman Black
Nicknames; - Xander, though some people call him Alex. Or Alexander to be pedantic. There are a couple of ex-schoolmates who still only refer to him by his surname, or call him Bowman.
Date of Birth; - 16th September 1978
Nationality; - British
Orientation; - Metrosexual (essentially straight but has slight man-loving tendencies)
Hometown; - Buckinghamshire, UK
Occupation; - Chemical Engineer
Likes;
- Work - He's always been a workaholic, and at USASI his life is no different. He revels in everything chemical and given that he pretty much lives in his lab USASI enjoy having him. He's cheap to run.
- Nettle Tea - He can drink it by the bucket and always drinks from a plain white mug. He can't deal with having colours in his oh so perfect lab.
- Buckminsterfullrene - OK it's a chemical but he loves it none the less. It's got no particular use to him but he adores it. It's far too gorgeous a structure not to. He's not the only chemist to think so.
- Music - He doesn't play (he used to play guitar but gave up after university), he listens. He goes to live music venues, he rocks out. I'd like to say hardcore but he really isn't. He likes to go hang out with his university and college friends, though would rather have a date to go with.
- Success - The fact that he's been successful often causes downfalls in his life, but it doesn't stop him loving it.
Dislikes;
- Mistakes - He's painfully particular, and going wrong in his calculations or chemistry drives him insane. Everything in it's right place. Slightly OCD, but there you go.
- Awkward situations - He's not truely a geek. He has a life outside of his laboratory and his social life isn't strictly javascript. The problem is he struggles in awkward situations. He finds it hard to get the message across if he likes someone and it can cause him to go a bit mad.
- Running out of time - The bane of his life. The clock always seems to be against him and as hard as he may try he can never fit everything he needs to do into his day.
Scars; - A colossal cut along the back of his head where he fell off a motorbike in his youth. You can't see it terribly well, there's hair in the way, but the end peeps out from the nape of his neck. Another scar on his lower back signifies how often he was used as his sister's plaything when he was little.
Tattoos/Piercings; - None.
Appearance; - Xander is rather good looking, with clear blue eyes and soft pale skin. Depending on his mood whether he's feeling lazy or a little bit more rogueish or whatever he might have a little stubbly bit of a beard. Most of the time he is clean shaven.
He has soft, rather shaggily cut jet black hair. He's greyed a little since entering his thirties but he's been dying his hair since he was a student anyway, to look cool and impress the ladies. Now it's more about consistency. You can't exactly tell that it's dyed either way, his natural hair colour is almost as dark.
Personality; - Xander is, almost agonisingly, a very calm and complacent individual. Most of the time. Catch him on a rare occasion where he might leave his lab then you'll find he's rather quite amiable and pleasant to be with. He does find it a little difficult to talk to some members of female staff, female staff that tend to use flirtation to get their way. He goes really rather red and starts stuttering. Awkward situations are not his strong point.
Inside his lab he's a chronic perfectionist. If you move things or bother him or disturb his utopia then he loses the plot, not in an angry way but in a psychologically rubbish way where he can't quite concentrate until everything is sorted and fixed and in it's right place. He becomes like a robot when he's working, and just produces chemicals when they're demanded of by the scientists.
He's hardly ever seen in the lab, not rearing his head for fear of running into the dominating and rather obnoxious scientists swanning around in pristine clean white coats taking the credit for all ther hard work, 90% of it done by guards and chemists. He doesn't like sitting in the staff rooms with them to drink tea or coffee and listen to them brag. He tends to leave his lab well after everyone else has retired to bed, and quite a few members of staff, he's pretty sure, are oblivious that he even exists.
History; - A thoroughly middle class terraced three-storey house in Buckinghamshire. The rooms all papered with pseudo William Morris wallpaper, a fireplace in every room and an aga in the kitchen. A perfect family home.
Here live Richard and Isabelle Black, and their four children. Samantha, 6, Robert, 4 and his twin brother Christopher and new baby boy, Alexander. As the youngest of four you can imagine the fun that Xander had growing up in the family home. He was the butt of everyone's joke, he was the play thing of his older sister, who would often dress him in doll's clothes and drag him tottering round the house. Housewife mother Isabelle did her best to prevent him from getting hurt, but when he was eighteen months old he fell down the last three steps and landed on a toy xylophone, cutting his back. He still has the scar.
He attended a local independent prep school, still living at home. He performed well but not over the school's average performance, about dead on. He was always very clever, but when it comes to public school there will always be some upper class tit that is cleverer than you. Had he gone to a state school it would have been different and he would have been noticed. It would take a little extra hard work to force his way towards being noticed for his abilities.
His cushioned life continued till the age of 11, when he was packed off to Ipswich to a secondary boys boarding school. Here he began to show promise in almost every aspect of his learning, quickly picking up French and Latin and burying himself in literature. He'd go out into the fields and collect insects and wildlife and examine what he caught. He wasn't terribly good at sports but didn't shy away. He became quite a handsome teenager, and as he got older would frequently be seen at weekends sat cross-legged in the grass talking through the fence to the girls from the comprehensive school next door. Not the guys quite yet, he wouldn't realise he was quite so flexible until much later in life.
He worked hard, occasionally dating as children do through the fence, not really having a girlfriend but feeling much bigger for knowing he could point out girls he'd half-kissed through the fence. It wouldn't be until his sixth form years that he had his first proper relationship with a girl called Sophia Martin-Gibbs.
It didn't last long. It was never going to, not without Xander being minor royalty or having a small fortune of his own. The problem was, it seemed, that going to public school when you are not insanely rich, strong and perfect at polo then you will find it difficult to attract posh girls. He had a few brief relationships, Sophia being his longest, with whom he split just before both of them left the sixth form for university. Sophia to Cambridge, Xander to Edinburgh to study Chemistry, which is where it all kicked off.
He took up guitar and joined a band, he got off with girls and got drunk. His extravagant cool-guy side took over, from beneath the ever-overbearing OCD and painful shyness that usually took him over. It didn't last long, and it took simply a few shots of absinthe, a gay club and a very attractive bisexual man to scare him back into being quiet and reserved once again. His year of rebellion didn't last long. He would see the man Dan on the quiet, behind the back of his then girlfriend Ellie, which wasn't exactly the best situation to be in, especially as he was really trying to figure out ehat it was exactly that he wanted. Ellie eventually found out, and both relationships ended rather swiftly.
He really worked at his last two years, and came out with a good first in Chemistry, and went back to take his PhD, passing again with flying colours.
Ever since he has worked, quietly, in the bowels of USASI, just synthesising when chemicals are requested or measuring out drugs and serums. His sister Samantha is a cabinet minister and has recently been in the news for claiming expenses on a dog groming service. Robert runs a successful chain of high-street lingerie stores and Christopher works in retail, as Xander's parents say. Christopher works for Tesco, and has since his mental breakdown four years ago. When it comes to Xander, he works for the US government. Whatever it is he does it's top secret. How wonderful.
Achievements; - His many degrees, his accolades within the field of chemistry and his consistency within his field of expertise. Not once has he failed to satisfy the needs of the miserable scientists.
Long-term Goals; - Become more confident at work, find something useful to do with buckinsterfullrene and do something really helpful to the world of science for which he will be eternally remembered.
Played By; - Celebrity is Matt Bellamy, played by Rae.
