It was raining over London. Big surprise. The problem was it hadn't been raining when Xander had entered the underground at Victoria, and now it was, arriving at Battersea for the early morning start. He was already late. Pulling the collar of his coat around his neck, he made a break for it, brown leather shoes under jeans squeaking on the damp pavement as he headed for the looming figure of the brick-built victorian power house that was his place of work. A secretive Royal institution that had been keeping planet Earth out of harm's way, on the quiet, for hundreds of years. He belted up the fire escape, and rammed himself in through the door that seemed, for all intents and purposes, completely out of use.
It was oddly quiet inside. Apart from the echoing sound of a radio somewhere along the neon-lit corridor. He frowned, taking off his coat and hanging it with the others, cursing the fact that he was the last one in. Again. He ruffled his sodden hair, rann a hand over his still fresh shaven chin and headed along the corridor, shirt sleeves rolled up, collar loose to show the black t-shirt underneath as he tramped into the atrium, before plodding down into the quadrant.
"Sorry..." He murmured, holding a hand out before anyone could say a word to him about his lateness, or his being damp. Or anything. "Sorry I'm late I missed the tube and then this bible-basher jumped me and I was stuck and..." He stopped. No one was at the front of the quadrant at all, and he found himself appologising to thin air. "Oh."

Time?...What time was it? He didn't have a clue, the minutes seemed like hours, the hours seemed like silent days as he sat in front of his computer. His body felt stiff, a scowl on his face, was it just him or was this large comfortable chair extremely uncomfortable? He sighed, it really must be him, his whole body felt numb as he absentmindedly stroked the keys as he typed away, the clunk of the keys were the only sound in the darkened room.
The bright light of the computer screen was rather ticking him off, he was defiantly in an irritable mood, he worked that one out hours ago but paid no mind to it, he didn't know how long he had confined himself to his office. Slowly he raised a hand and began to rub at his exhausted eyes, he couldn't sleep, the head quarters seemed lonely when everyone left. He didn't know how it happened, he wasn't quite sure when he began to sleep in his office, sure the settee was quite comfortable but he couldn't bring anyone back here, to his work place. What would he say, 'Oh you don't mind doing it on the couch because I'm so busy with work I can't be arsed to stay at my apartment?' He came to the conclusion that wasn't the best pick up line.He wasn't sure if he was conscious when he began to move, leaving his desk and slowly edged to wards the closed door to his office that lead to the quadrant.
Slowly he began to open the door, he wasn't quite sure if anyone was in, he heard some noise earlier but when he was in that room, in this state your not quite sure how time flies. "Ohayou" he mumbled as he staggered out of the entrance to his office. He didn't really care about his appearance, you could obviously tell that he hadn't his share of beauty sleep, he had dark rings under his eyes from the lack of sleep, his hair still had its bed head fiery and untamed appearance and his face wasn't clean shaven as it usually was, it had started to grow from the last time he shaved and that was Friday.

Maybe he should have waited before starting work, seeing as he was already done with most of his paperwork he had set out for the day, his pen gliding quickly over the paper as signed the sheet for the third time, placing it into a folder and shoving it into one of the many draws of his desk. He really should try and clean that out, he'd put so much stuff in there recently but had yet to file any of it in the proper places. Peter let out a sigh as he ran a hand through his hair and whirled around, noticing the sound of someone entering. He stood up from his chair and left his small office he had set up, quickly noticing both Yami and Xander had woken up or arrived. He noticed Xander was dripping wet and finally took notice of the pounding rain on the roof.
" Elona still not here?" Peters voice showed he was tired, having to stifle back the slight yawn that followed his speech. He headed toward the kitchen and glanced at the other two. " Tea, coffee, anything else?" He asked, waiting for there answers before entering. He switched the kettle on and yawned again, sorting himself out a cup of tea, and whatever the other two wanted before taking the cups out and putting them on a table and leaning against one of the several desk's scattered around the room.

She'd already been in for two hours, glasses perched on the edge of her nose as the light of the computer monitor cast across her face in the dark corner of the warehouse, and her mouth fell open. She took her glasses off in one swift movement, skidding back a little on her chair. "Shit."
She was a rather pretty woman, and fairly steady-minded, but what she had just read on the monitor had shocked her. There were a few close friends she lost four years ago when Torchwood fell, but this... it was unbelieveable. One she thought had been saved had tragically lost their life. And it was Torchwood's fault. She got to her feet, her damp trainers printing into the floor as she jogged to the door, and climbed the stairs, trying to get her head around the update from cardiff she'd just seen. Entering the Quadrant, she cast her eyes across the other three, smiling and nodding rather weakly to each of them.
"Hi... hi hi... Er.... news. Have you read? I guess not." She said, running a hand through her short black hair, trying to think of how to put it. "Erm, do you guys remember Ianto Jones and Lisa Hallett? They worked in R and D at Canary Wharf all them years ago." She said, clicking her thumbnails over each other. "And Lisa died when the cybermen came?"
She sat down at her upstairs desk, pidgeon-toed as she gritted her teeth. "Ianto's died." She said, still a little bit shocked by it, ruffling her hair.
Xander frowned, not quite sure he actually knew what it was Elona was on about, and decided to sit down. "Er... tea, if you're offering, Pete, cheers." He said quietly, sitting himself at his own quadrant desk, ruffling his hair again which was still sodden and nasty. He blinked at the monitor, the login screen a mystery to him at this time of the morning. He cast a glance at Yami, wondering if he knew the guy Elona was blabbering on about. He had a feeling he did, he had a face in his head but he was never involved with R&D when he worked at Canary Wharf so he was never particularly close to either Jones of Hallett.

Yami watched as Elona entered the Quadrant, only showing a mild interest until she brought up Ianto and Lisa. He nodded when she asked that Lisa died when the cybermen came, many from Torchwood did. What he wasn't ready to hear was what she said next. If he wasn't wake before he sure was wake now, at the news he gained a spring in his tired step and a gleam in his eyes.
"Is there any details on his death?" he asked, forgetting about the offer of tea or coffee by Pete. He fully well knew that everyone in Torchwood was risking their lives doing their job for the greater good and protecting earth but he never thought that they would loose Ianto. When he just left his office he got mail but he didn't pay no mind to it, now he wished he had. He had to be told by Elona that Ianto, a old colleague had died, he was the boss he should have been the one to break the news not Elona.
Finally snapping out of his musings he looked to Pete. "I'll have a strong coffee, Pete, and could you put some whiskey in there to strengthen it up. I need something to warm me up" he said, his voice flat as he lowered his eyes, his body language showed his worry, his shoulders hung low instead of their square arrogant self.

Peter had brought the drinks out before Elona had spoken, pretty much already knowing what the other two would want, as well as a black tea for Elona and a cup of tea for him. He had been stood by the door, drinks in hand, when she said about Lisa and Ianto. He dropped all four of the mugs he had been holding, a lock of shock crossing his face. " He's dead?" His voice was almost broken, not registering the fact he had just managed to break four mugs and cover his shoes and lower trousers in tea and coffee. Ianto had died? His jaw clamped onto his lip to stop himself from making a scene, taking a deep breath and relaxing. Him and Ianto had dated when they had both been working in TW1. They had kept it on the down low, neither of them really knowing what their coworkers would think, but broke it up fairly quickly.
" Oh, shit. I'll clean it up ," Peter quickly cleaned up the mess and retreated into the kitchen. He didn't want to hear how he had died, getting the feeling it would be bad. Really bad. He switched the kettle back on and started to make a fresh batch of tea and coffee. He was still fighting back tears. Sure, they hadn't exactly stayed close over the years but still. His fist slammed lightly against the surface, hoping it hadn't made too much noise.

Shit. She should have known this was coming, but being her usual klutz self she didn't think. She had forgotten. She cast a quick worried glance after Peter and rolled her eyes, covering for him. "Butter fingers." She said, hissing slightly as she followed Peter into the kitchen, tucking her hair out of her face as she shut the door behind her. She figured the others didn't need to hear this.
"Are you okay, Pete?" She asked, nodding to the hot liquid soaked into his ankles, but she hoped he knew what she really meant, her hands behind her pressed behind her against the door, a concerned expression on her face as she tried to be reassuring. She took the mugs from him and rinsed them in the sink before handing them back, rubbing the newly-formed crack in the top of her solid ceramic Emma Bridgewater mug. It had to happen some day, it wasn't that important.
Xander frowned slightly, looking back at Yami. "Always a good start to the day." He said with a slight dismissive smile, a cautious one that seemed to half-understand. Having not known the guy so well was a problem but that wasn't the point. Losing a colleague was never comfortable. "Poor bloke..." He muttered, logging in. In Xander's mind the only right thing was to carry on, and hopefully prevent anything like this happening again. The problem was he could almost feel the shock eminating from Yami, and he kind-of knew they were going to have to take a moment to let this sink in.
"Did you work closely with him?" He asked, leaning his elbows on the desk, resting his chin on his linked fingers, blue eyes cautiously watching his boss.

Yami felt like he was in a gaze, finally Xander's voice broke the trance he was under. "Uh, yeah. Ianto and me used to work together, we used to hang out too, have a coffee sometimes" he said, answering Alexander's question. He was thankful that Elona went to try and comfort Pete, he sort of knew that Ianto and Pete was more than close at one stage but paid no mind to it, it wasn't his place was it?
Again Yami sighed, the whole Ianto thing eating away at the back of his mind but he wouldn't let TW1 stand still. He too a deep breath and let his shoulders raise, showing more confidence as he looked back to Alex then to the kitchen door. "Well we can't mope around, we can't let anyone else die, can we?" he said, raising his voice so it could be heard in the kitchen. "Ianto wouldn't want anyone else dying because we're slacking, right?" he added, giving a little chuckle to try and lighten the mood, he was almost acting like Ianto, he always seemed to brighten a room up.

" Yeah, just came as a shock and all," Peter managed to say, his voice holding the same tone it had earlier. He turned and smiled slightly at Elona, trying to put on a brave face. He hated losing people, especially friends. Which really sucked when you were in the middle of Torchwood. He took the mugs and quickly made fresh drinks, passing Elona's her drink before taking a sip of his. He was leaned against the counter, sighing and opening the door and passed the other two males their drinks before heading over to his desk and sitting down, he quickly logged onto his account and checked his email, finding the email about Ianto's death. The 456? He quickly scanned through the rest of his mail, trying to find something to take his mind off of it, but he couldn't find anything that really needed taking care of.

Alex sighed, turning back to the screen and scrolling down through his analysis results. He'd left eveything running overnight to get the ectoplasm Yami had given him thoroughly sorted. "Bingo.... cheers Peter..." He said, taking the mug from his colleague with a small smile before forwarding the analysis results to Yami's account.
"Sending you the results of that analysis you asked for me, I think you'll be surprised." He said, raising his eyebrows. "It's a placenta... a big old alien placenta." He said, grimacing. "And I grabbed hold of it with my hands." he added, looking down at his fingers and wiping shuddering. There were certain things that got to Alexander, and putting his hand into a substance that had been squeezed out of the birth canal of god knows what wasn't his idea of fun. His expression said it all.
Elona smiled slightly as Peter walked past her, swiftly running her thumb around the top of her mug as she always did before her first sip, which she then deeply regretted as it was piping hot. She hissed, wafting her lips with her spare hand as she slowly headed back into the quadrant, sitting at her proper desk, the one she had adorned with pictures of her family and things she had collected from gigs, parties and occasions she wished to remember. She picked her reading glasses from the cluttered surface and balanced them on the ridge of her nose, listening to the discussion between Xander and Yami. She grinned slightly, her eyes turning to her boss.
"Good job you didn't lick it then." She said, her nose twitching cheekily before she re-logged in herself, closing her email screen to do some proper work.

Yami had to try and keep serious but what Elona said was actually quite humorous and chuckled for a moment before he returned to his more serious self. He noticed Peter had come back into the Quadrant, he didn't notice that Peter placed his cup on the side next to him. "Thanks, Pete" he beamed, looking at the mug and took it into his hands, his hands clasped onto the sides, the heat radiating off the cup actually warmed up his hands and finally he got back feeling in his fingers.
"Placenta, ya say Xander?" he asked, returning to the conversation with Alexander. At the moment he was in deep thought, so they probably had reproduction of alien species in their city? Not good. Hmm, they didn't even know the species they were dealing with if it was on file. He pondered his choices cautiously, some of his team was still shaken up from the news, could he risk them going out to try and find the creature?

An alien placenta? Okay that can't be good. It could be especially bad if its a hostile race... Peter thought as he began to search through the database for what it could be, but found nothing particularly worrying yet. He whirled around on his chair again to face his colleagues and glanced at Yami, almost knowing that he would be thinking of going out and trying to find it, but at the same time worrying that his team wouldn't be at full strength because of the news of Ianto's death. Peter smiled to himself, realizing that he spent way too much time around these people considering he could as good as tell what they were thinking. He silently whirled around again and began to type more into the machine, still getting nothing.
" Yami, I'm sure we would all agree, getting this thing may be the best thing for us ," Peter spoke softly without turning from the machine. Whatever was out there, it had to be taken care of no matter what. If it was a threat, they would take care of it. If it wasn't, they would have to sort it out. He sighed and whirled around again to face them after logging off his computer.

Xander looked up, his eyes moving from Peter to Yami. He knew the general response on these sort of missions, the chemist stayed behind. It didn't surprise him, it was his job after all. He sighed, almost inaudibly, and cast a quick glance over Yami's shoulder into his glass-walled laboratory. "I can do a thermochemical analysis and figure out what sort of life-form it is." He said, blue eyes back on his boss for a moment. "If you three want to go out and look for it I can hold fort." He said, with a slight smile, running a hand through his hair which was still rather damp thanks to the downpour.
"Once I've got a chemical analysis done I can contact you with what you're looking for." He added, scrolling through the programs on his screen to find the command for the analysis machine that sat on the desk at the back of his lab, and the red light beneath started to glow. He grinned, got to his feet and walked to the glass doors, leaving them open as he pulled his lab coat on, opening the cold storeage to take out the sample.
"Oooh." Elona's eyes lit up, and a rather temptuous grin spread across her lips. "Does this mean we get to go play with scary scary monsters?" She laughed, checking her gun was safe and secure in the back of her denim shorts before getting to her feet, kicking her stool back under the desk as she rounded the corner, her mug clamped between her fingers as she waited for the next command. She would be out of there in a second if this was her place, but that was her biggest issue. She had a shoot first ask questions later sort of attitude that would never work in charge. Probably a good job that she wasn't.

Yami couldn't help but smile at Elona's comment, she sure knew how to make it sound fun like a game instead of something serious like...working. He listened to Pete, it was sure that Pete could read minds or something but then he thought of a more logical explanations, such as his body language could give off signals as he was thinking, his glances between the members of his team while he thought about them etc.
Finally after being silent through the entire thing he nodded, making his decision. "Ok, Elona, Pete get what you need, we might need to drug it and put it in the cells or...we might have to shoot it on sight. Xander, you can hold fort and give us those results. We won't move in until we know the species and the nature of this thing" he ordered before he retreated into his office to retrieve his gun and other gadgets.

Xander grinned, nodding. "You got it boss." He said, pulling the blue latex gloves onto his hands and grabbing the high-tech rediculous-looking futuristic lab goggles (that degree level lab stuents have to wear... pfft) and propping them on top of his head, before seeking out a rather long pair of internal surgical forceps to remove some of the sickly pale pink substance from the bottom of the chilled conical flask, the contents sticky and bloody and not exactly sweet smelling. He pulled a small sample, and placed it under the IR light. It'd take a minute, by then Yami and the guys would probably be well away, on the tail of whatever it was that had exuded this crap.
Elona ran back down the echoing metal stairs into her warehouse, the tiny corner of which she had occupied with all her things, the rest was just waiting to be filled with interesting things. The huge wall-to-ceiling fan at the other end chugged and wafted casually, though didn't make much of a ripple near Elona's glass-topped desk. She took her long black woolblend coat, checked her gun was present again, grabbed a taser and switched on the comm device that sat just inside her aural canal. She grabbed a few sample bags, and checked her small archaologist's kit was in her pocket, along with her small carbon dating device. She grinned, turning back along the warehouse wall and up the staircase into the quadrant, picking fluff from the hem of her coat.

Peter grinned at Elona, loving the fact she could take a serious situation and twist it around until it was a game. He pushed himself up from his chair and headed into his room, glancing at the rooms walls. He headed toward his desk and pulled the draws open, switching on his comm device. He quickly slipped off his soaked jeans and swapped into a spare pair of trousers as well as grabbing his gun and slipping it into his hip holster. He also grabbed his taser and slipped it into his pocket. He turned around and grabbed his coat, slipping it on over his black shirt. He also grabbed his gloves and slipped them on over his hands, knowing it was cold and wet outside.
" Well, I'm ready when you are ," Peter said with a smile before checking he had everything in his pockets, nodding to himself when he was sure he did.

Yami took his leave when Elona and Pete went to get ready for the mission, he had to prepare as well. Retreating into his office he switched on the light, the bright white lights lit up the room, he sighed, he found himself lost within his thoughts as he thought about the old Torchwood One, when he used to hang around Ianto, a small smile graced his lips at a certain memory. The smile only lasted a moment until it faded and he returned to the land of the living, he went across to his desk, opening the top right draw and took out his gun, placing it into his hip halter. The extra weight was welcomed as he took his long black cashmere wool coat from it's place, hanging on the back of his chair and shrugged the warm extra layer on.
He was just about to leave his room when he remembered something, he stopped, looking at the small long thin middle draw in his desk, he thought about bringing it with him, should he? He reinforced the rules about taking out technology, why shouldn't he be any different? He shouldn't be above the rules he enforces, but they could help them find the alien. He was torn, he stuttered, taking a small step forward before he stopped himself again. Was he making the right choice? Leaving them here when they could assist them, they could save lives if anything went wrong.
In a blurr he went back to his desk, thumbling with the key to the lock and jerked the draw open, there they were. He stared at them, blankly as his hand inched forward, finally he grasped them, he felt the strap constrict around his left wrist and suddenly he shut the draw, twisting the key and locked it, the contents were for his eyes only.
Switching his comm device on his shut the door to his office, the long sleeves of his coat hiding the device on his wrist. He looked around seeing Elona and Pete had already got back, how long had he been in there? "Let's Go" he ordered, as he walked past them and headed for the exit.

Xander grinned, watching the three others charge past, his eyes more specifically on Yami as the man seemed to self-consciously cover his arm, almost without thinking, after leaving his office. Xander always had been scarily good at judging people's moods. He frowned a little, casting a glance through the partition window into Yami's office, at that top drawer that always stayed locked, and shook his head, brushing a hand through his hair again before going back to the analysis machine, pressing buttons here and there, the controls clicking and whirring into place as numbers began to run up on the computer screen, trying to assertain what sort of organism it was that had produced this.
Elona nodded, flicking her jet black hair out of her eyes as she followed Yami out towards the exit corridor, grinning at Peter as she caught up with him, nudging his shoulder slightly. "Onwards and upwards. Ey?" She said, her slight Nigerian accent slightly heavier on her words for a moment, a small smile across her face. "Never a minute's peace, is it?" She added, her eyes flicking to Yami again, her smile twitching a little. It was only to be expected that she was a bit intimidated by him. He was older, authoritative, in charge, rather attractive and he was, above all other things, her boss. It was right and proper to be scared sometimes.
Still, she felt safe. She knew nothing could break their ranks with Yami in charge. Where Hartman had failed with Canary Wharf, Yami had succeeded at Battersea. No excuses any more. For that she loved her job.

Peter couldn't help but notice the strange behavior of Yami, but decided not to mention anything. If Yami wanted to hide something it wasn't his place to pry. Instead he kept his pace up and continued to follow after Yami. He turned to smile at Elona, almost jealous of how positive she always seemed. It was amazing in his eyes, how she always seemed to be smiling.
" Yeah, busy as ever. But, means your moving forward I suppose ," Peter said with a light smile, his hands shoved into the pockets of his coat as he continued to follow after Yami, trying to ignore the fact he was blatantly hiding his wrist. Instead he found his mind floating off on its own to when he had joined Torchwood all those years ago. He sighed softly, checking his phone for any messages having the bad habit of ignoring the message tone. Nope, nothing other than his mum calling. " So, where are we going?" Peter asked, wanting to double check it wasn't going to be the sewer or something.
