The water curled onto the shore, stroking away the fluctuations in the sand. The beach had been washed in peach afternoon glow. Gnats hovered in the temperate air, semi transparent in the sinking sun. Today, the ocean spray tasted especially salty, perhaps insinuated by the winds that began to blow from sea. A very delicate wind brushed the collar of his shirt against his neck, and whimsically tousled his hair.
Something had happened, another year had gone by. Spring had arrived some time ago, but missed it as it were leaving for Summer. It moved so slowly around here, everything. Nothing ever happened--except for the same. The battles seemed over, for a long time, even if they still raged. He wondered if the world away from this island still moved as fast as it did.
He knew this fresh blast of air, was supposed to mean something. To start over again. There was always something to be done, but today and perhaps for the rest of it, he continued to just sit. All of them, were encompassed together on this island, but yet never felt so…distant.
Skyler looked up to the clouds that sailed effortlessly over the ocean. He could see the light snared in the droplets in his eyelashes as he tilted his head back. He slid further against the sand, shoulders propped against some driftwood. He curled up, hugging his knees, closing his eyes and was still. Even a finch came and landed on an antler before fluttering away as an ear flicked.
The elk-boy tried to recount the name of every face had met on this adventure, in the distant harbors of his memory. They raced by, as if he had met them yesterday. Each face came with something, maybe a laugh, a cry, a wise word or even a good argument. But yet, when he raised his earthen eyes, there was no one.
